MPhil Applied Linguistics (Weekend)

Program Introduction

In today’s world, there is always a growing need and rising demand for proficient and trained English teachers and writers. MPhil Applied Linguistics produces skilled English language teaching professionals, adroit writers, linguistics researchers and language planners who contribute in various Applied Linguistic fields.

The School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSS&H) at UMT offers a two-year MPhil Applied Linguistics degree program. This program promotes a research-based pedagogic compound involving both synchronic and diachronic perspectives on language. Similarly, it fosters the aesthetic reception of literature through an extensive study of texts from all over the world.

It creates an interactive academic environment in the participants which cultivates modes of learning language that explore the relationship between the mind and the world, the individual and social identities, the past and present realities, and last but not least, between fact and imagination.

The MPhil Applied Linguistics degree offers students a vast array of opportunities to delve into the complexity of linguistic and literary studies, and their inherent connection to various other academic domains such as Cultural Studies and Philosophy.

The MPhil program offers stimulating curricula with a variety of learning and teaching methodologies and a proficient as well as a supportive academic environment. The participants are required to study eight courses with seven core courses and one elective course. The seven core courses based on Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods which help them to get prepared for research and thesis writing. Other courses include General Linguistics, Phonetics and Phonology, Syntactic Theory, Semantics and Pragmatics and Sociolinguistics. These courses are designed to cover the basic levels of linguistic analysis and explore the functions of language in society. The MPhil Applied Linguistics degree provides a diversity of learning experience and enables participants to be good leaders in a wide variety of occupations.

MA English with minimum 45% marks)

  • Admission Interview by UMT
